🐾 Wagner in Poland
Good morning, readers!
Before you dive into today's news, we need to give you a heads-up. Among the articles, there's one flaunting a gif of none other than a toilet.
🤝 So here’s the deal. We're slipping in a piece about the recent Quran-burning in Sweden right before it. Consider it our way of keeping you mentally equipped before facing what’s to come.
Today’s geopolitics hotspots:
Two anti-Islam men playing with fire
Salwan Najem (left), Salwan Momika (right).
On Monday, two men in Sweden kicked and burned pages of the Quran in front of the Royal Palace.
The firestarters
Salwan Momika (37)
Arrived in Sweden in 2018.
Granted a three-year residence permit in 2021.
Salwan Najem (48)
Immigrated to Sweden in 1998.
Became a Swedish citizen in 2005.
They are both from Iraq and claim to be Christians.
Playing with fire
Those who are given permission to burn the Quran, an act safeguarded by Swedish law, are given one hour for their activity.
Momika and Najem are notorious for using a megaphone to taunt counter-protesters. This time was no exception.
On this occasion, they took their actions further by throwing around multiple printed pages of the Quran in both Arabic and Swedish translations.
Reactions
This time around, counter-protestors brought their own megaphones to drown out the two Quran-burning protesters.
Some protesters tried to break through the police barricade to disrupt the burning.
After the book-burning theatrics, some counter-protestors rushed to gather the remains of the Quran pages scattered by the two men.
The Swedish government opened a case to reconsider Momika’s residence permit, after finding out that he was involved in a Christian militia group in Iraq.
Russian psyop in Poland
The Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) have busted two Russian agents who were putting up recruitment stickers to promote the Wagner Group and plant fear in the Polish population.
✍🏻 Quick facts
According to Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski, the two Russians were spreading propaganda materials of the Wagner Group in Krakow and Warsaw.
The materials included stickers with the Wagner logo and QR codes linking to a Russian website about the group.
The two were charged with espionage and other offenses.
They supposedly received the materials in Moscow and were paid up to 500,000 rubles ($5,000) for their activities.
